If Raila was a person who likes to get revenge, he would support Ruto. He would then make sure the Mt Kenya region loses all importance in Kenyan politics for many years to come. However, knowing Raila's character, he may play it safe instead. He may get the top job at the African Union first. Then he could come back to Kenya with much power and influence. At that point, the tables could turn against Ruto. Raila could force Ruto to do whatever Raila wants, or Ruto's political career would end.Raila is an experienced politician who has been involved in Kenyan politics for decades. He has run for president multiple times but never won. His supporters are very loyal and see him as a leader fighting for the common people against the elite.Ruto is the current president of Kenya after winning the 2022 election. However, his victory was narrow and controversial, with Raila disputing the results. The Mt Kenya region was a crucial voting bloc that helped swing the election for Ruto.
So if Raila decided to retaliate in a vindictive way, he could rally his supporters against Ruto's government. He could work to make voters in the Mt Kenya region feel ignored and unimportant under Ruto. This could make it very difficult for Ruto to win re-election or for his allies to stay in power after he leaves office. However, based on Raila's past actions, it seems more likely he would take a measured, patient approach instead of immediately seeking revenge. He could first accept a prestigious position like chair of the African Union.
Then when his AU term ends, Raila could return to Kenya with enhanced stature and clout. At that point, he may be able to pressure and manipulate Ruto in ways the current president cannot ignore. Ruto would have to follow Raila's instructions or risk being completely sidelined and blocked from achieving any of his goals.Raila may choose a completely different path. He is in his late 70s, so he may decide to retire from active politics. Or he could continue contesting elections in hopes of finally becoming president before his career ends.
